WELCOME TO EQUI-ARMY-NDO!
WE LOVE HORSES. We recognize that our country was built upon the backs of horses and that they should be as appreciated as the eagle is as a symbol of America. While the eagle flew overhead, horses labored mightily on the land to bring people and their possessions to our vast frontiers. WE BELIEVE horses are magnificent, beautiful and innocent animals who work hard and are entitled to a retirement that provides them with proper food, shelter, space to run, vet care and love. We believe in the establishment of retirement funds for race and other working horses to ensure their future welfare. Mandating “social security” for horses could help curb the number of foals produced each year as well as help reduce the huge number who are sent to kill auctions and cruel, inhumane slaughter every year. If only a very few thoroughbreds make the racing grade each year, guess where too many of the others may be headed…FROM STABLE TO TABLE. We believe that horses who are not able to race or perform at certain levels ARE able to be retrained successfully into another career, if they are only given the chance.
THIS WEBSITE WAS CREATED to honor the memory of thoroughbred Deputy Broad who was slaughtered in July 2011. He speaks for all slaughtered horses in this statement:
“I would require that all kill buyers and middlemen MUST travel to a slaughterhouse like Richelieu, where I was killed, and assist in the unloading of the terrified horses that were hauled there. They should have to watch us as we are prodded and pushed inside to chaos and then watch the entire slaughter process for each horse without looking away or closing their eyes or covering their ears or noses. I want them to see it, feel it, hear it, smell it. Then they can go and have a nice day.”
NOW LET THE CONVERSATION CONTINUE!

Very excellent presentation of the problem/solution. Too common sense to be adopted, I fear.

Here’s a link that shows the BLM has not been honest about reporting rangeland damage done due to supporting private cattle operations at tax payer expense but blaming the wild mustangs and burros. This was the justification for those horrible helicopter gathers. (It’s Official: BLM’s Welfare Cattle Program Killing Western Public Lands, Wild Horses Not Guilty)

Urgent – Filly down in dire need…
by BHFER
We have been asked by Animal Control in another county to take a filly that has endured a horrible ordeal. We have the facilities and around the clock care she needs. Last week the owner of several horses sent a man to pick up her horses from a boarding facility which included a weak and ill yearling filly. The man loaded all of the horses except for the filly – she did not want to get on. He fought with her for quite awhile until he finally got her in. Once in, surrounded by other horses which included a stud, she went down in the trailer and was trampled on and could not get up. The man pulled her off the trailer and she has been down since. A vet examined her twice and has recommended she be taken to a rehab facility that has a sling and the means to help her. The vet treated her with IV fluids and anti-inflammatory medication that day and once more since.
The filly, with human assistance, has been able to get up and stand on two occasions since the injury – but she didn’t stay up for very long. But the fact that she could stand says a lot, IMO. She has been being turned every 2 to 3 hours and she is eating and drinking. Pam and I will be leaving within the hour to try to get the filly into the trailer to get her here and into a sling so she can be examined by our vet and a treatment plan implemented. If, however, it is determined that her injury is such that she will not have a good quality of life we will do what is best for her. But we won’t know unless we try to help her.
The filly has survived this long – she obviously has a will to live. I know it is going to be a lot of work but how do we deny her? I keep thinking about my recovery process after my spinal cord surgery which left me quadriplegic. I worked hard, kept the faith, and had a wonderful support system of humans (including my family). I regained use of my limbs again. As time went by, swelling went down, pain was managed – I got my life back. I can’t feel anything below my neck still but it is a lot better than living in a wheelchair. I may have limitations but I am alive. This filly deserves a chance.
We need help to help her. At this time we would like to ask for pledges to help with her initial expenses. Both our traditional and holistic vets will be part of her rehab and recovery. She may, depending on what the vet determines once she is here, have to go to the hospital. We’re taking it baby steps but at least for now the wheels are in motion to get her the care she needs. In fact, we’re pulling out to go to get her now.
Please pray for her – she’s just a baby. If you would like to pledge to help her please email me at bhfer. No amount is too small – donations are tax deductible. God bless and I’ll update once we get back.
Sincerely,
Theresa

Calling all Z Dumplings far and wide – with or without name tags; calling all Rednecks – all chapters; calling all Equi-Army team-mates; calling all Z-ster posters with FB and Forum access:
Advance ticket sales start tomorrow! As promised last year, I’m willing to do some legwork (that is not a redneck term!) to help everyone get all the scoop they need. I will call group sales to see what sort of bargains we can get at several price levels for groups of 20 or more. From the list I started last year, I know there are at least 30-40 people on the list. I’ll also contact secretariat.com to see if they are the Z-Party organizers again this year and to let them know a large herd of Z-Dumplings want to be part of the fun! I will post everything I find out Monday night PDT.
Here’s what I need from all of you: FOR THIS EFFORT ONLY, please email my work email (do not respond here, it’s hard to read through posts from work) with the subject line “BC2012 RSVP” and the following info – your name (real, please), your posting moniker, how many in your group definately coming to BC2012; do you have your hotel already?; how many in your group are probably coming to BC2012; or sorry, you can’t make it.
Do please let the Z forum, FB, and EANDO peeps know since I can’t get to all of them.

This is just hot off of e-mail!
U.S. District Court Judge Beryl A. Howell issued a ruling ordering the BLM to consider scientific evidence submitted by AWHPC regarding the negative impacts of castration on individual wild stallions and on the herds as a whole. Judge Howell warned that the agency could not remain “studiously ignorant of material scientific evidence.” The link will tell you more.

Thanks for posting Barbara. This is an important article that I wish were in every mainstream paper and tv news programs!
1. YOU ARE ALL AMAZING!!! NOW I KNOW WE CAN’T TAKE FULL CREDIT FOR THE FACT THAT MARLENE’S RESCUE IS MORE THAN HALF-WAY TO ITS GOAL AND WE HAVE UNTIL SUNDAY TO RAISE THE REMAINING FUNDS. I KNOW OTHERS ARE HELPING TOO. BUT I THINK OUR CONTRIBUTION IS AMAZING AND YOU ARE AMAZING.
For those of you who still want to donate, please go to http://www.valleyviewranchequinerescue.webs.com to make your contribution. We must raise the remaining funds by Sunday so Marlene Dodge will be able to “ransom” these poor souls out of pergatory. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
I reported to all of you yesterday (I think it was yesterday) that Marlene, Shirley Pugia and I are working with U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer’s office on the horse anti-slaughter bill. We appreciate all your support. I would ask that each of you contact your U.S. Senators and tell them that you expect them to support this bill.
I ALSO HAVE ANOTHER WAY WE CAN LEVERAGE THE SITUATION. DID YOU ALL READY IN TODAY’S MEDIA THAT 51 PERCENT (THE MAJORITY) OF VIEWERS OF THE KENTUCKY DERBY WERE WOMEN?????? DID YOU SEE THAT!!!!!! AND THAT THIS YEAR’S KENTUCKY DERBY HAD A HIGHER VIEWERSHIP BASED ON NIELSEN RATINGS THAN THE NBA PLAYOFF GAMES OR THE 2012 DAYTONA 500 (Sorry Rednecks). WE HAVE POWER!!!!! I JUST SENT AN EMAIL TO THE NTRA ASKING WHAT THEY WERE PLANNING ON DOING ABOUT MOUNTAINEER RACE TRACK AND HORSE SLAUGHTER. I ASKED THEM IF THEY WERE IN THE RACING BUSINESS OR THE HORSE MEAT BUSINESS???? ntra@ntra.com. I ASK ALL MY FEMALE Z’ISTERS TO DO THE SAME TODAY. LET THEM KNOW WE KNOW WE ARE A FORCE TO BE REKONED WITH. GO OUT AND KICK B…

TO ALL FRIENDS OF HORSES: Our precious wild horses and burros are being annihilated by the Dept. of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM). For more than 25 years, the BLM has systematically rounded up these animals, sometimes by helicopter, and put them in holding pens for years or simply killed them. BLM says it keeps them in pens so people can adopt them. One of its many lies and schemes to get these animals off the range, off millions of acres of government lands where they have lived peacefully for more than 500 years. Dear friends—the BLM intends to reduce the wild herds which once were close to 500,000+ to pockets of extremely limited numbers. They call the mustangs “ferals” who are in the way of ranching, cattle, gas, mineral and oil drillers. Cattle are ferals on the range! THE MUSTANGS ARE DISAPPEARING, despite many groups fighting for their survival for so many years. It’s time for us to march on Washington and demonstrate at the Dept. of Interior/BLM building. We have no time to lose because as you read this, the BLM is planning to kill more mustangs and burros and has even targeted Cloud’s herd.
Equi-Army-NDO is too small to orchestrate such a demonstration, but the Humane Society of the United States can do it! I am asking you to understand this tragedy as it is drawing its last breath in the West and Southwest. I am pleading with you to please write to Keith Dane at HSUS right now, today, and ask him to organize the march against the BLM this coming July. During July, HSUS will hold a 4-day conference for animal advocates from all over the USA. It is called TAFA, and here is what HSUS says about it:
Taking Action for Animals (TAFA) is the premier conference of the animal advocacy movement that brings together both seasoned activists and individuals new to the world of animal protection. TAFA offers the latest ideas and tactics to take real action. Connect with other animal advocates who share the vision of a better world for us all, animals and people alike. REGISTER NOW for TAFA 2012 to be held July 27-30, 2012, at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park hotel in beautiful Washington, D.C.
Please take this request to heart! It may be our last chance to save these animals! Please write to Keith Dane, Director of the Equine Protection Department, HSUS, The Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20037
Phone: 202-452-1100 Monday—Friday 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Saturday—Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Eastern time.
And ask for this demonstration during the July dates of the TAFA meeting! Even if Keith cannot do this now, he will understand that we are pushing for immediate action on this critical issue and he can implement this concept later. You should also send copies of your letter to Keith to all the animal advocacy organizations you know about—post it on your websites, your Facebook pages—get the idea out there!
Can you think of a better way to do this at this point in time? All the other ways have already been tried, and it’s time we take the elevator up to the top floor and look down and see what our work has netted so far for these doomed animals. It’s time for sidewalk action! Even if you cannot march yourself, others can! Please help pass the word on this! And if you need to speak with me about it, I’m at 973-328-6564. My email address is: l_artssavelives@verizon.net. Our group’s website is http://www.equi-army-ndo.com. I will be sending this notice to the media as well so that they know we are serious about picketing the BLM—the enemy of our animals. Your requests to HSUS, your notifying friends and organizations of this cause, and my alerting the media about this emergency will result in a groundswell of awareness that just might save the last of these noble and magnificent animals. I pray we all can make this happen. Thank you, most sincerely.

PANHANDLE RESCUE IN FLORIDA HAS A SWEET, PRETTY AND PETITE TWO-YEAR-OLD MARE THAT WAS RESCUED FROM A “BAD PLACE”–HER PHOTO IS ON OUR ACTION NEEDED PAGE, BUT HERE IS HER WRITE-UP BY DIANE LOWERY, PRESIDENT OF PANHANDLE:
This 2 yr. old filly was seized by Escambia County Sheriffs Dept. in January 2012. She was so weak she had to be carried onto the trailer. In the beginning of her rehab, she had to be “helped up” several times, but now she is doing much better and is ready for a new home. She is halter broke, good with the farrier and vet and accepted a small rider sitting on her back. She still has more weight to gain, but has turned out to be a beautiful horse. She would be great as a companion horse or could be ridden by a lightweight person. This is a county horse, so there will be no adoption fees or pre-approval. Our goal is to get her the best home possible. No traders or dealers. Serious inquiries only.

If you know anyone who lives in TN, please get this message forwarded to them. They need to call the people representing them and let them know they do not want to eat horse meat. It is not safe for human consumption besides being morally reprehensible. Thanks folks, your help is REALLY needed. Thank you Delia for letting me know. Zz hugs, DMCQ
• Target: Tenn. Rep. Frank Niceley & the Tenn. State Legislature
• Sponsored by: Friends of Equines Society FOES of Equine Slaughter
As a result of a meeting of the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) held last December, a plan was formulated by certain politicians to push their pro-slaughter agenda on a state-by-state basis across the land, working through their own state legislatures. Due to the plan of the NCSL, several state legislators are introducing bills in their own home states to support horse-slaughter and the re-opening of the plants in the USA.
As a result of the NCSLs diabolical plan, a Tenn. Rep. wants to make it easier to sell horse meat in the great state of Tennessee. Rep. Frank Niceley, R-Strawberry Plains, has moved to relax the rules for selling horse meat in Tennessee, contending that some animals are now being hauled to Mexico under inhumane conditions for slaughter.
Current law requires that horse meat be packaged and labeled prior to sale and, combined with federal laws, effectively bans the sale of horse meat, he said. His bill (HB1361) eliminates the packaging and labeling requirements.
Polls taken over the years consistantly show that 70% or more Americans oppose horse-slaughter and find the thought of eating horse-flesh reprehensible, much the same as the thought of eating our cats or dogs.
Tennesse Residents, please, if you are against horse slaughter and DO NOT want to see horse-slaughter legalized in your state or horse-meat sold in your markets, please contact your state legislators and let them know you VOTE and are opposed to horse-slaughter and say “NO” to Niceleys HB1361 bill.
Here is a link where you can contact your Tennessee Reps; Tenn. State Legislature;http://www.legislature.state.tn.us/
PLEASE ALSO TAKE NOTE: Below is a petition to the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) and a list of the states that are also working through them in conjunction with each other to bring equine slaughter back in the United States and to put horsemeat on YOUR grocery-market shelves and eventually on your table!~ If you live in one of the states below, we strongly urge you to contact your state legislatures to let them know you vote and OPPOSE horse slaughter.

It is about the tragedy of our wild horses, which Interior and the BLM seem determined to annihilate. HSUS is having a meeting in DC July 27-29. Please–can HSUS organize/publicize/do the groundwork for a march on Interior and the BLM? Our mustangs and burros are almost totally gone, either languishing in horrible pens, driven there by helicopters commissioned by the BLM, or they are being killed secretly. And their plans keep intensifying as time passes. Their goal is to have no horses or burros on the range that these innocent animals have occupied for 500 years or more. Instead, they are brokering for the ranchers, and cattle have taken over the range, thereby cancelling out one of the most authentic and iconic symbols of the West. Are we to do nothing? So many groups have been fighting the BLM in this for 20 years–nothing works! We need more dramatic action–press jolting–public jolting–and a march on Interior could work. Interior is selling public lands to the ranchers…where is that money going? If it is not selling, what kind of rent per acre is the BLM charging ranchers, one of whom is Salazar himself? Something is rotten in Interior, and it is the BLM. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ORGANIZE A MARCH-PLEASE! WE HAVE TO SAVE THE LAST FEW MUSTANGS AND BURROS, OTHERWISE A CHAPTER OF AMERICAN HISTORY WILL CLOSE FOREVER. Thank you.

MEET SALT – a TB that won $125 in his racing career. He was picked up here in Ocala by Beauty’s Haven Horse Rescue, a wonderful rescue group. When we got there to pick him up he held his head down – his neck leaning against the fence like he was trying to disappear. No water and living in a sand pit. No hay. The left side of his face has a big “dent” in it. Body sores. Lip dangling. Puffy eyes with flies and gnats. Thick unhealthy coat. Terrible feet that smell horrible. Ulcerations in his mouth. Dull eyes that seemed to have wandered away from where he was. You can see the indentation in his skull. We may never know what happened.
He almost fell coming off the trailer. Dr. Ryan has examined him. Salt (he will have a new name when it comes to me) is a 1 on the Henneke scale and even without the blood work back yet Dr. Ryan says some of his organs may be borderline. Salt can’t shut his urine flow off – there is just no muscle. When a body is deprived of food it feeds off of itself – the fat goes, the muscle, then organs. Death isn’t far behind.
He last raced at Thistledown for trainer /owner Michelle McGhee.
Please say prayers for him. We will have an update later and Stacy Ferris will try to reach the former trainer owner to see how he ended up in Florida. (posted by Equi-Army-NDO 4/28/12)

Sadly, according to the rescue’s FB page, Salt has left us. RIP, dear one.

As far as I’m concerned, he will be the star of the show. A great promotion of the usefulness of retired runners, like Funny Cide a few years ago.

I am so excited about this group of good Samaritans! They actually are all volunteers, ready to help wild mustangs and people who need a mentor regarding care of a wild mustang or advice on how to help. Go to the link above and see a story of how they rescued a wild mare and helped her get a can off of her hoof and let her get back to her band without the can. Then please visit their site at Least Restrictive Training concepts. For more on this wonderful group go to http://www.whmentors.org/clo/support.html
At first this seems like it may be good news. But if you think twice and then again, it is sinister in nature. Remember that the BLM hired helicopter pilots who were humanely shooing wild horses and burros into traps in anything but humane ways. Who do you think will get these contracts? Sue Wallis’ friends? The Cattle owners and ranchers who want the land? The big oil moguls and mineral mining folks? Here’s the story.
The Bureau of Land Management, in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service (FS), is soliciting bids for several contracts that will help manage wild horses and burros located across the western United States. The contracts are for a new bait trapping method that is intended to relieve areas of excess wild horses and burros where helicopter drive trapping is not an effective method. The bids are the first of their kind, in that they involve six zones across the West, with a potential for multiple contractors simultaneously bait trapping animals over an extended period of time. The contracts involve setting up a trap, capturing wild horses and burros and shipping them to the BLM preparation facilities. The capture, care and handling must be completed by those who are knowledgeable and experienced about the behavior and trapping of equines.
The current free-roaming population of BLM-managed wild horses and burros is 38,500, which exceeds by nearly 12,000 the number determined by the BLM to be the appropriate management level. Off the range, there are more than 47,000 wild horses and burros cared for in either short-term corrals or long-term pastures. All these animals, whether on or off the range, are protected by the BLM under the 1971 law.

THIS IS A FILM THAT CAN BRING THE HORSE SLAUGHTER MESSAGE HOME TO THE PUBLIC. PLEASE SUPPORT IT!
Help us Take Saving America’s Horses Coast to Coast
GlobalGiving just approved WFLF’s brand new Campaign to help take Saving America’s Horses Coast to Coast!
Now SEE and SHARE our dynamic project page at GlobalGiving and help us secure this valuable spot on GlobalGiving permanently!
The Wild for Life Foundation Saving America’s Horses Coast to Coast campaign is effecting social change with its powerful, compelling and lingering tour-de-force documentary message that timing is pivotal, with the ongoing elimination of our wild horses from the rangelands and the escalated push by foreign investors to reopen horse slaughter plants in the U.S.; more and more horses are at risk of cruel and barbaric slaughter.
To secure a permanent spot on GlobalGiving, we need to 50 donors to donate a total of $4,000 in 30 days or less.
We are enlightening, engaging and empowering the public, changing hearts and minds with the un-whitewashed truth, that round ups and slaughter are NOT necessary, nor are they humane. “SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES is a sobering wake up call to the need for all horsemen and horsewomen to do more to ensure that our beloved horses are protected,” — Bing Bush Jr., equine attorney.
Timing is pivotal for our horses, with the escalated push by foreign investors to reopen horse slaughter plants in the U.S., more and more horses are at risk of cruel and barbaric slaughter. Saving America’s Horses is the nation’s voice for America’s horses. You can help save a nation of horses by supporting this campaign.

Paula Bacon, former mayor Kaufman, TX: “SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES is a powerhouse narrative. It takes in every aspect and tells its story with intelligence and a deep-running composure.”
Laura Allen, president Animal Law Coalition: “SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES is a brilliant hard hitting exposé on the economic and environmental devastation caused by the seedy cruel practice of horse slaughter.”
John Holland, Equine Welfare Alliance: “The public must see this film! The beauty of the cinematography lay in stark contrast to the dark truths that SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES so painstakingly and irrefutably lay bare.”

I think the wild mustangs and burros are beautiful! DMCQ
Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul alike. — John Muir
An estimated 300 wild donkeys have been granted a reprieve from a lethal state plan which has killed about 130 of them since 2007. They live in the Big Bend Ranch State Park, a 316,000 acre area. Park rangers had been eliminating some of them, because they are considered an invasive species, meaning they were introduced and can do damage to native plants while consuming water.
Protestors gathered 103,000 signatures and asked Governor Perry to stop the state’s donkey killing. People who support the policy still argue they are invasive and harm habitats for native animals. Some of this damage though appears to be just donkey poop and urine. The state of Texas has photos of the “damage caused by feral burros” here.
The Humane Society offered to provide a nonlethal plan to deal with them, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will contribute up to $10,00 for the aerial survey. Click on the link to read more.

Horse people are both for and against the NYTimes article from last Sunday about drugs and racing. What’s plain good news about it is that it has reached the public and scared some in racing who have reason to want to hide what they have been doing. For those reasons, I’m glad it was written. Here’s a follow-up piece:

EMERGENCY!!!! if you know of anyone in South Carolina who could help a lady in the Sumter area rescue 3 mustangs abandoned in a dump, please let me know. She has no clue on how to deal with these horses and she is over 5 hours away from me. If she can get them out of there, she said she has a home for them and already has started fundraising to help with the care.

New post on Wild Horse Education by Laura Leigh
Inhumane conduct toward Wild Horses and Burros challenged, again
“Laura Leigh documents abusive behavior at The Triple B roundup, Judge issues a Basic stop order (TRO) during the roundup, but when presented with more documentation later, decides he can only rule on this one roundup, as the original suit was for Triple B, and by law he did not feel he could rule on “program wide inhumane actions”. But during the 9th circuit case a ruling was that roundups are inevitable and will occur again, so Laura is asking the judge to consider the inhumane case based on this inevitability and the 9th circuit ruling. The intent is to hold BLM and their contractors accountable for creating and implementing truly ‘humane standards’.”
In Reno, on March 20, 2012 a Motion to reconsider the decision in the Triple B wild horse roundup “Inhumane” case has been filed. January 26th Judge Howard McKibben denied the Injunctive Relief sought against BLM treatment of wild horses. The motion was denied due to no roundups scheduled during 2012. The new motion allowed by the Court is based on a ruling in another case by Laura Leigh on First Amendment Rights that won a landmark win in the 9th Circuit. Three judges ruled that the roundups were inevitable based on current appropriate management levels that the BLM projected. The roundup doesn’t have to be scheduled to consider the conduct based on demonstrated history. The suit filed by Attorney Gordon Cowan for Laura Leigh is that there is no indication that the BLM would handle roundups differently than they were mishandled previously.
The original TRO was for inhumane conduct, August 2011, admitted to by the BLM and the BLM included a recommendation to the court that outlined a 90 day timeline to review and implement a written protocol. No written policy has been published or implemented. The BLM has two weeks to answer the motion.

Hoofprints of the Heart saved 4 sad souls 3 days ago at the PLA auction outside Phoenix. Two are former dude string horses and they are very thin but otherwise they look okay. Another is a 6 YO Arab mare who just had her foal taken from her. She is in serious need of groceries and hoof care. Her owners said they cut back on her food after she foaled! It cost $1150 to buy all 4. The killer buyers bought at least 8 others.
If anyone has room for one or more of these, or can help with feed, Hoofprints would appreciate it. The two dude string horses are definitely rideable. James will post photos on FB tomorrow morning. The Arab mare is on there already.
Please contact James at Hoofprints (780-6900) if you can assist.

Subject: Cross training for now and for the future
Thank you for leading the way in showing that horses can be trained for racing and also trained for their future career. I am so glad that you reported that the horses are happy with their work. Your work ensures that when they are finished racing and retire, it will be easier to transition to that next career and hopefully to find a really compatible home. Our group, the Equi-Army-No Days Off (EAN), acts as a liaison between horses in peril, being abused, or about to be sent off to be slaughtered. We are constantly searching for ways that horses can be helped and can avoid such fates. Your leadership is very welcomed. I have put your stable on my personal “Good Guys” list.

According to the Paulick Report, at the above link, Sue Wallis is having a meeting at Wright County Livestock Auction which is private property. The media and disruptive people will not be allowed to attend. The public meeting place where they last met apparently did not want to welcome such a meeting back. The discussion is about getting the plant for horse slaughter up and running by September. I think all that can be done is to support the local people as BEW has done. I am suggesting that we could write the Mayor, civic organizations, Chamber of Commerce, local media, and anyone else you can think of that might be able to have influence on the situation.

Sorry Skipper! I am guilty for pleading the case for our beautiful wild mustangs on this page, rather than requesting that you post it on our Action Needed! page.
That news belongs where you have posted it, because it doesn’t have to do with rescues or emergencies where horses have been abandoned, abused, etc. I am very glad you posted that message!!!!! Thank you!
Good for the people of Missouri! I had a call last night from the newspaper last night verifying thhttp://www.paulickreport.com/news/bloodstock/missouri-proposed-horse-slaughter-plant-draws-hundreds-of-opponents-to-meeting/at I was the person who wrote to them on this issue.
BRAVA, DEAR BARBARA!!! Thanks to you and to all the people who objected to this terrible place, we force the enemy to fall back and replan their evil.
Hello my friends,
The BLM will be moving into Wyoming soon for gathering yet more mustangs. I am forwarding this request for e-mailing the BLM from the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign. I think it is more effective to write in your own words, but this link takes you to their prepared letter. It has many good points you can use in your letter or you may choose to use it as is.
I’m calling on my friends and family members to join me in fighting for the future of America’s wild horses and burros. These iconic animals are threatened as never before by a federal policy that rounds them up by the tens of thousands from public lands in the West and inhumanely warehouses them at great taxpayer expense.
Please visit Oppose BLM Plans for Another Roundup this time in Wyoming’s North Lander Complex to speak up to help some of America’s few remaining wild burros! The more citizens who express opposition, the better our chances of saving our mustangs and burros. I believe that this is one mechanism that this group may be able to use in court to present evidence that many people disagree with what the BLM is doing, that is to systemic eliminate the wild mustangs. They have been successful in at least two recent instances. If the link does not work for you, go to American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign website and respond from there. Thank you so much.
Chris Heyde, Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), has written a very informative article at https://www.savingamericasmustangs.org/news_and_events/article/chris_heyde_of_the_animal_welfare_institute_addresses_horse_slaughter/?utm_source=BLM+accepts+Wyoming&utm_campaign=Wyoming+Sanctuary&utm_medium=email.
Mr. Heyde asks the American public to stay alert about potential movement towards the reopening of a plant. If anyone hears of such an effort, send him an email so they can help raise awareness in that area of the problems such a facility causes.
THIS IS FROM HORSE AND MAN–Adella has almost lost her foot and will be lame for life, but her life is being saved. A photo of her, in pain, is on our Action Needed page. Horse and Man is disappointed that few people responded to its plea to help Adella with her huge medical bills…please help by sending any amount to Habitat for Horses in the Houston area of TX. Thank you.

It is about the March Bucket Fund. (In case you missed it, it is linked here.)
You see, generally, the first day of a Bucket Fund has huge donations. But, today, the first day of Adella’s Bucket Fund, donations were off by 75%.
Hmmmm. I’m feeling badly and I know that I need to figure it out. Maybe I didn’t choose a favorable charity horse for this month, or perhaps I didn’t write her story very well… Since this is such a huge deficit, I’m figuring it has to be something. Either the subject matter, the way I depicted it, or my writing.
I’m in the dark here.
So, I’d like to know your feedback. Really. Something is obviously up and I’d sure like to know what it is since I feel responsible to you readers and to you donors as well as a responsibility to the charities. I don’t want to let anyone down. I’d like the Bucket Fund to be as successful as it could be.
I’m totally open to comments.
Please give me your feedback so I can improve the Bucket Fund.
All responses will be read and considered deeply. THANK YOU for helping me improve.
Please feel free to email your responses to: horseandman@gmail.com
To be absolutely clear, HABITAT FOR HORSES (the charity that cares for Adella) is thrilled with anything they receive from us. They are perfectly happy. So please don’t hold them responsible for my desire to fix this for Adella and for the future.
Wonder if other states will follow suit? Could be bad news for the horses, OR it could save people from vendettas. We’ll keep up on this.

WANT TO SEE A GREAT LETTER THAT YOU CAN MODIFY AND SEND TO THE PEOPLE IN MISSOURI WHO AREE FACING THE TERRIBLE POSSIBILITY OF A SLAUGHTERHOUSE IN
THEIR AREA??? Here’s a terrific one, done by our own Barbara Wood:
Dear citizens of Mountain Grove and Cabool, MO:
I am writing out of my concern that you are falling into a trap set by Sue Wallis of Wyoming and your Senator Blunt to put a horse slaughter plant in your area.
Trust me, this will not give your town a good name or provided any of the touted “benefits” proposed by these two.
You are being told that horses are “just like any other livestock”. This is not true. Horses are prey animals with an innate sense of impending danger. They have names, and they have pedigrees. They have served this country since its inception by providing transportation, enabling the Pony Express, and serving in almost every war this country has fought. Currently, they participate in athletic sports, shows, trail riding, or simply serve as human companions.
Another distortion is that people are in favor of this effort. They are not now, nor will they be when they learn what it does to their town and their economy. I live in Texas, not Missouri, but if you will check out http://www.kaufmanzoning.net, you will see what happened to a town here in Texas that provided this “service”. Sadly, this is the very town where my own mother was born.
In addition, if you would like, I can provide you with a list of medicines/substances given to horses that render them UNFIT for human consumption.
You are also likely to face more cases of horse theft when people realize they can get something for nothing and sell it for money right there in your town.
No one is arguing that there are not too many horses. That is quite true, but that problem needs to be attacked by controlling opportunistic overbreeding. There are many services that provide gelding clinics at little or no charge. Again, it all goes back to greed.
The proposed slaughter is supposed to be “humane”. There is no such thing, and if you believe this, I fear you are falling for one of the worst distortions of all.
Again, I do not live in Missouri, but I love to visit your state. I may choose not to in the future. I am only one, but I can contact many who feel as I do. Please do not make one of the biggest mistakes you could make. I am not a PETA member who believes in animal “rights”, as much as I am a person who believes in human responsibility! I see no responsibility from the parties endeavoring to make money at your town’s expense and the expense of the innocent animals they slaughter. I cannot imagine what it would do to the soul of a person who would choose this for a “career”.
Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss this.
Sincere thanks,
Barbara Wood

SO I OPEN MY NEW BLOODHORSE AND WHAT DO I SEE? NOT ONLY THE USUAL ADS FOR ZILLIONS OF STALLIONS, BUT A LANE’S END AD FOR ROCK HARD TEN THAT BOASTS OF THE NUMBER OF MARES HE COVERED IN THE PAST THREE YEARS: 131 IN 2009, 145 IN 2010, AND 104 IN 2011. THAT’S ALMOST 400 POSSIBLE LIVE FOALS…AND WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM ALL? AND HE’S ONLY ONE STALLION!!! THE OTHER FARMS ARE DOING THE SAME WITH THEIR DOZENS OF STALLIONS! AND WE WONDER WHY SO MANY OF OUR HORSES GO TO SLAUGHTER!!! Quarter horses comprise about 60% of the USA horses slaughtered annually, but about 25% are TBs, and no secret where they come from…
I finally got a call through to the BLM (202)208-3100. I told them my name and that I needed to speak to anyone about Carrie Hendrickson’s appointment. A gentleman answered and said, “Mam! Mam! Mam! You have to contact us through our website!” I think they must be getting a lot of calls. While he was mamming me, I wasn’t even trying to speak. I said, “Yes, I am going to do that.” and he hung up. Here’s the web page, http://www.doi.gov. When you get there you scroll down to find BLM and click on it. When the BLM page comes up scroll down to contact us and then you have the place where you finally get to comment. Here’s what I wrote:
“I just read about the appointment of Carrie Hendrickson to the advisory board to represent the General Public. She believes that slaughtering horses and even wild mustangs is an option and speaks out in favor of such torturous and horrendous death for any horse. Please rescind that appointment! She does not represent any of the 80% of Americans who believe it is abusive, inhumane and immoral to slaughter horses. Slaughtering horses IS NOT euthanasia. We do not want slaughtering facilities brought back to the U. S. We do not want to see wild mustangs sent to slaughtering facilities. We do not want to have Ms. Hendrickson appointed to represent us on the BLM Advisory Board. We are hopeful that you will do the right thing and rescind her appointment.”
“Infuriating” doesn’t even begin to describe this!
http://www.paulickreport.com/news/bloodstock/maryland-woman-accused-in-record-animal-cruelty-case-awarded-60-horses/
Add disgusting to the mix. Again and again, the law betrays our horses.
Just imagine the heartbreak for the rescuers! I have asked for help to try to understand the situation.

WE HAVE TO ACT NOW, TODAY, TO STOP SUE WALLIS FROM OPENING A HORSE SLAUGHTERHOUSE IN MISSOURI—IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN SOON UNLESS WE PUT UP ROADBLOCKS TO HER EVIL!!!!!!
Watch this video: http://www.ky3.com/news/ky3-horse-meat-mountain-grove-cabool-missouri-slaughter-processing-plant-human-consumption-horse-meat-plant-proposed-in-missouri-20120223,0,237037.story
• Sue Wallis wants to open her first slaughter plant in Missouri. She also says she only wants horses in good condition. If this happens, people can expect an sharp increase in stolen horses. They propose to slaughter 400 horses per day. Wallis says “100%” of the people of Missouri want the slaughterhouse in their state. Her lies are becoming whoppers; she has no shame. Women are nurturers—this one is a killer.
Horse meat processing plant proposed in the Ozarks MOUNTAIN GROVE, Mo. — A company called Unified Equine wants the Ozarks to be home to its first processing plant for horse meat for human consumption. The proposed plant would be just east of Mountain Grove near the Wright-Texas County line in the Twin Cities Industrial Park. And guess who owns Unified Equine??? SUE WALLIS, the killer whale.
FROM RIP DEPUTY BROAD: it is not too late — they are in the preliminary phase, so do contact the Mountain Grove Chamber of Commerce. contact info is below. and save a copy of your email — you will need it for the next town, and the next and the next.
This plant is being backed by a Wallis ally, Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri. Contact him immediately and tell him NO!!!!

Hey, kids—here is a horse who has been lovingly cared for by Diana at Panhandle in Florida. Read the description—she is a docile, sweet horse. Because she is different, she needs a special place to live, like at a farm near a rehab center for the physically or mentally disabled—or, with someone with a huge heart who can give Bella a healthy, happy life…just because…
This is the Panhandle of Florida, not Texas or OK. Anyone out there have any ideas??? Please spread the word…
Thank you (photo on our Action Needed page!)

I am looking for a home and a “special purpose” for a beautiful and sweet little horse. Bella is a Wry Nose Horse that is very sweet, loves attention, and is great with children. I truly believe in my heart that she would be a great mentor for children with physical challenges. She has a twisted nose and it just makes her even more special and beautiful!
Bella was an under weight rescue that I took in a year ago. Now Bella is a healthy and “very happy” horse. She would wag her tail if she knew how! She has one eye that will tear up because some nerves are strained due to the deformity. Regular massage of her face and skull helps. Her molars are intact, that is how she eats. She uses her lips to tear grass or pick up food and moves it to the back of her mouth. She requires an annual dental to keep the unopposed teeth filed down. This needs to be done by a certified equine dentist. She has all her shots, worming and coggins. No adoption fee required.
Bella is approx 10 years old but looks younger. She has a very young and curious personality and is extremely friendly. She loves attention and wants to be a part of everything. She would rather be with her humans than her pasture mates. Bella has a very willing spirit, she has done everything I have asked of her. She rides if lead or follows another horse, stands for farrier, and trailer loads.
Below is a link to Bella’s Facebook Page. Please take a look at pictures and read her story. Bella is ready for a Forever Home!!! If you or anyone you know would be interested in Bella please call Linda Carver @ 850-982-0661. If not, please forward this email to all your contacts.

Veitch Suspension Connected to Life At Ten Incident Upheld
by: Ron Mitchell
Ron Mitchell wrote that the suspension was upheld. Although Veitch was fired by the commission on Nov. 28, 2011, the suspension would be imposed if he were to successfully appeal his firing. Also, other states would generally recognize the Kentucky action through reciprocity agreements. Layton concluded Veitch violated five rules of racing in connection with how he handled the Life At Ten incident before, during, and after the Ladies’ Classic at Churchill Downs. For more details go to TheHorse.com
I wanted to report on some good news and I found it.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is planning another roundup of wild horses in the remote Challis Mountains in Idaho. The action will take place three years after the capture of 366 wild horses in this area in a 2009 roundup that killed at least 11 mustangs. The BLM allows just 185 wild horses to live in the Challis Herd Management Area (HMA), while authorizing at least five times as many cattle to graze there. Please go to the link, http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/6931/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=9687. There is more information, a video, and a place to take action.
The page also spells out the BLM’s proposal for a massive burro roundup in the southwestern part of Arizona on the California border. If you have not done so yet, please take a moment to oppose this ill-conceived roundup, which aims to remove 350 burros and return of 50 castrated Jacks (male burros) to the range. There is an action button to oppose this misguided plan. (I’m not so sure that it is misguided. I truly believe the BLM is trying to extinguish the wild mustangs and burros.) Once they are gone, there will be no bringing them back.
LEFEVRE WALKED, JUST LIKE WE KNEW SHE WOULD…i wish i would have had a bookie to go to to bet on this chick’s walking. And she did. And she will glide easily through any nominal task she is given in her first offender program. What a damn shame that in this country, animals have no rights at all and their lives are not valued or respected. This young lady will find another hustle regarding horses soon, as she must be laughing up her sleeves that she got away with her cruelty and greed. She got a wuss judge up for election…i hope the universe pays her back
Now we know the outcome for the infamous Lefever. I wish there was some way to get her picture posted at every race track and every backside in the country. The picture should be large and the heading should say BEWARE OF THIS PERSON: Responsible for the Deaths of 100+ Horses. Then she could not just move to another state and start again without trainers and owners being aware of who she is and what she’s done. Maybe some bill boards would do it…
STILL IN NEED OF ADOPTION–JESSE JAMES!!!!!
Jesse James; an 8 yr. old Tennesee Walking Horse gelding is up for adoption! He is 14.2 hands and has a sweet disposition. Miami-Dade County, Florida – The remains of a five-year-old miniature horse were discovered at Northwest 182nd Street and 129th Avenue earlier today by a police officer. Last month a slaughtered quarterhorse was found in the same place – the infamous C-9 basin where illegal horse slaughter never seems to stop.
In an interview with CBS Miami, Richard Couto of Animal Recovery Mission states the small horse most likely had been slaughtered for its meat. Couto said the miniature horse had been tortured and calls these people who do this violent and evil. This is the third slaughtered horse found in the last two months slaughtered for their meat in the last few months.
Couto’s organization investigates and combats illegal horse slaughter where horses are butchered for their meat and sold on the black market. He continues to help shut down illegal slaughter farms as well as animal sacrifice farms.
Humane activists call this area of South Florida the top illegal horse slaughter areas in the country.
” I don’t know if this is ever going to stop,” states MaryEllen Capolla of West Palm Beach, Florida. “The ethnic thing in Miami has these people thinking that horse meat is some kind of medical and sexual miracle meat. These guys don’t care if they take your best horse – as long as they can make money and sell the meat on the black market. Couto does a great job trying to stop it, but unless there’s a lot more help, all he can do is make an example of one of these creeps when they get caught. When in the world is Miami going to put some major pressure on this problem and really clean up this part of the state? It’s a really bad blemish to a beautiful city.”
IF IT’S THE MIAMI AREA, THEN THIS IS A.R.M.-COUTO TURF. HE HAS BEEN FIGHTING THESE MONSTERS WHO DO THIS TO HORSES FOR YEARS. In southern Florida, this slaughtering has a connection to a cultural situation that is not pc to talk about but which exists. The Miami area is where all the illegal horse slaughter farms are located and, once discovered, they either pick up and move to the Everglades area, polluting its waters, or they close down for a few weeks and start the blood running again. Some have been working to move their filthy operations up to the panhandle of the state. The law isn’t responsive enough to this epidemic. There’s lots of money involved in dumping sick and lame and stolen horses at these slaughter farms where they receive no food, water, shelter, medical care—they are left to die or meet the knives of the slaughterers. There’s lots of money involved in illegally selling the meat from these innocent animals to people in the state who eat it, especially if it is tied to and depends upon a cultural base. How a cultural issue can be solved is beyond the scope of this news story, but the only sure way I know of to fight these blood farms is through ANIMAL RECOVERY MISSION, with Richard Couto. He has been fighting these farms for years, with the help of the SPCA and state and national government agencies. The battle is slow and hard, but Couto keeps risking his life by doing it. He needs more support.

LET’S GET TOGETHER AND SAVE THIS HANDSOME
FELLOW BY GETTING HIM TO A PLACE WHERE HE WILL GET REAL HORSE FOOD AND HAVE
ENOUGH ROOM TO ROAM AROUND IN AND LIVE A NORMAL HORSE LIFE!!! Elderly couple can no longer afford to keep him and a farm is willing to take him if some of us can help with expenses….thank you…
We have a
challenge.
We have been asked to help a horse.
He is owned by an elderly couple, one of whom is dying. He is a 10 year old STB stallion, over 16 hh, living in a small pen, being fed beet pulp, onions, and
bread, as they cannot afford hay. He is actually a beautiful and gentle horse, most deserving of a chance. He is registered and was successful on the track, and appears sound and trained to ride. His nickname is Whiskey.
We need your help to help Whiskey.
Whiskey needs to be picked up, trailered to a vets, gelded, and then cared for. He needs to be evaluated for adoption. Can anyone help us help him, either with funds or resources?
THIS is how we help our community and help
horses BEFORE auction!

We did it! Thanks to all who signed the petition! Atlantic City has re-thought the plan to reinstitute the diving horse performance. This happened yesterday too! I just didn’t read the news alert until a few minutes ago. What a smiley, hopeful, warm and sweet Valentine’s Day it was!
The planets and the gods must have been aligned to have all that good news in one day…but again, I am the skeptic in the group–I’ll believe this if no horse is forced to jump from a pier from now until December. Atlantic City is desperate for business. I haven’t been there in almost two years and I still get offers for comps…so let’s pray that our animal rights colleagues completely defeated this stupid idea. Thank you, Doris!!!!
I just got a valentine from Justice Milan D. Smith speaking for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. He rebuked Judge Larry Hicks of Reno for denying a temporary restraining order sought by Leigh in late 2010. He sternly pointed out the case became moot because Hicks was tardy in making a judgment either for or against Leigh. The 9th Circuit decision was that the BLM Must Grant Press Access to Observe “Gathers”. Horseback Magazine reports on the huge win for wild horse advocate, Laura Leigh, today.
In a second valentine, the Justice Department signed an agreement today with American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign attorneys to cancel the roundup and removal of 198 wild mustangs living in the Monte Cristo Wild Horse Territory (WHT), which is administered by the U.S. Forest Service.
With The Cloud Foundation and Western Watersheds Project, the American wild Horse Preservation Campaign lawsuit has already:
► Blocked the BLM’s devastating plan to replace up to 200 wild free-roaming horses in the Pancake Complex with castrated stallions, and
► Stopped the agency from ‘zeroing out” (eliminating all wild horses from) the Jakes Wash Herd Area, which also lies within the Pancake Complex.”
They need help to continue the legal process to set a strong legal precedent for the proper protection and management of wild horses and burros. Please go to the link and donate if you can to help save the wild ones we love. Thanks for anything you can do, including reposting this message.

Sorry, part of the quote marks did not stay in place. It should have been,

Great Valentines to receive, Doris–our wild horse colleagues have fought so long and hard against the BLM–with so few horses and burros left, I’m hoping against hope that they start to win some of these battles against corporate greed. Thank you for posting this.
The BLM is testing a new program of allowing adoptions of the wild mustangs at the gather site. It kicks off on Feb. 18th. Here’s the information I have from Wild Horse Education about the first trial of the new program. The point is to save the horses of the travel from the gather site to the holding pens and then perhaps adoption later for a few. Laura Leigh is one of the outside observers of the gathers and has reported on the deaths in this latest gather operation. RIP to all the beautiful wild ones who are dying needlessly and breaking my heart. As a comfort to me, I keep trying to imagine them running free and having abundance in the freedom of the green pastures where there is no torment for all our beautiful, beautiful wild ones. For more details and updates go to the link below.
Update on Trapsite Adoption by Laura Leigh
A page has been set up to post information as it becomes available on the progress of the adoption event set for Feb. 18th at the BLM pens located at temporary holding in Tonopah. http://wildhorseeducation.org/stone-cabin-trapsite-adoption-info/
skipper – i hope this is the place to post this. i will do an email from now on if you prefer. it is about the poor 65 or so starving horses in el paso. i have been trying to find some way to get them help now, and let the worry about sorting out the legal “who shot john” mess re:the sheriff’s office to others. the tv station that broadcast the videos will not respond to my requests for owner’s name (of land/horses); the list of active equine rescues in el paso is exactly 0…yep, there are none per a list i received from my friend who runs a rescue in tucson. she got the list from CANTER. the closest equine rescues are in new mexico. i will contact them tomorrow anyway, if no one is working on this. i have a call in to the vet who responded and actually saw the horses. she had to euthanize one on the site. can you tell me if there is any positive help going in their direction? i don’t want to spin my wheels if it is already being handled. please let me know. thanks.
Nancy, our group has sent this message out since the story erupted. From what I know, there is NO person or group on site who is taking charge. Local people are trying to feed the horses but so many are in such terrible shape. It is private, not public, land. The law there is useless–doing nothing. I thought it was a desert area, but it isn’t. It’s more like barren grazing land. We don’t know of any water sources. I have posted twice on Zenny’s site, asking for anyone who lives in that area to please contact us as we are planning a press contact project to go to major outlets nationwide. No response. Out of the thousands of Zenny’s fans, our luck that none are in the El Paso area–or perhaps they don’t want to be involved. If we were on the ground there, it would be easy to drive around to the vets, the law, the rescues, etc.–but the closest team mate we have to this tragedy is 600 miles away. I will send your message to our counselor who is making strategic calls to find out the real facts. That the law of Texas turns its back on this is no surprise…in our 7 month existence, most of the emergencies we have responded to have been in TX, sad to say.
I understand that some of the local farmers are providing what hay they can. I worry now about water. I wonder if anyone has moved some big water containers there since the horses cannot be moved yet. Nancy, thank you for helping. Anything that can bring positive things to these horses in need is a blessing indeed.
Only one large water trough on this large acreage, and the sick ones cannot make it there. Private property registered to a business that takes the rejects from the slaughter-bound trucks, fattens them up to either go back to slaughter–which means profit to this farm owner–or sold to rodeos if they can rehabilitate them. He just puts them out on the property which is mostly desert with little brush and only the one water trough. He’s got a legit business in a state where the law cares not a whit about animals. Yet, many of us are working on it.
Hi, my name is Tara Weeast and I’m from Williamstown, NJ. I am looking to
place\find a forever home for my 14 year old Morgan\Saddlebred mare. I’ve had her for about 4 months now and she is an absolute sweetheart. I got her from Camelot in October 2011 and had intended on finding her a home right away, however I’ve recently had knee surgery and that has set me back a great deal. I was told she was an Amish cart horse and the family who owned her fell on hard times and was forced to give her up. When I saw her at the auction she was emaciated but her feet
were freshly done and she looked fairly well kept. She’s been healthy since I’ve had her, and she’s put on atleast 100lbs, but she still has a ways to go. I saddled her up and got on her in November with a western saddle and hackamore. She didn’t buck or rear, but she has no idea of what to do without being led. I leave March 4th for an internship in Colorado and there is no way that I will be able to afford to keep her while I’m gone. I have 2 other horses that I board and the financial strain has become too much. She has such a big heart, and more than anything I think she deserves a second chance at a better life. I am doing everything in my power so that she will not see the likes of an auction again. She is UTD on her shots and is having her feet done this week; her only bad habit is that she is a windsucker. She is an ideal companion horse, but I do believe that she has the potential to become something great. I am not asking any fee for her, just that she will not see the auction or harsh treatment again in her life.
If you can help us, please let me know. I can be reached at 609-221-0917.
I have attached some pictures of her…we call her Amora.
Thank you!!
LET’S TRACK THIS DEVELOPMENT VERY CAREFULLY!
A broad-based group of Thoroughbred industry stakeholders announced today the establishment of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA)—an organization designed to serve as both the accrediting body for aftercare facilities that care for Thoroughbreds following the conclusion of their racing careers and a fundraising body to support these approved facilities.
Funded initially by seed money from Breeders’ Cup, Ltd., The Jockey Club, and Keeneland Association, the TAA is comprised of owners, trainers, breeders, racetracks, jockeys, aftercare professionals and other industry groups.
“It is our responsibility as owners, tracks, breeders, trainers, jockeys, bloodstock agents, and anyone who has a stake in the game to take responsibility for the aftercare of these great animals who are the keystone of our sport,” said TAA board President and Thoroughbred owner Jack Wolf. “Securing support and funding from Breeders’ Cup, The Jockey Club, Keeneland and so many other great organizations speaks to the credibility and importance of our effort and is so greatly appreciated.”
Additional support of the TAA has been provided by Adena Springs North, CARMA, Fasig-Tipton, The Jockeys’ Guild, New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, The New York Racing Association, Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company and Thoroughbred Charities of America. The organization also received staff support from Thoroughbred Charities of America, the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA). The NTRA will continue to provide that support on an ongoing basis.
The TAA will accredit aftercare facilities based on a Code of Standards covering operations, education, horse management, facility services and adoption policies. Simultaneously, the TAA will raise funds on behalf of accredited facilities via institutional contributions that are to be directed 100% to program services rather than to fundraising or general administrative costs.
“The Breeders’ Cup is proud to be one of the initial funders for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and fully support the TAA goals of an industry-wide, annually funded program committed to the placement or second-career retraining of retired Thoroughbreds on a national scale,” said Craig Fravel, President and CEO of Breeders’ Cup, Ltd. “Through the contributions of our sport’s stakeholders, we can help ensure that our horses are treated in a dignified manner throughout their lives.”
“The Jockey Club’s involvement and support of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is a natural extension of our other ongoing efforts in the area of Thoroughbred aftercare,” said James L. Gagliano, The Jockey Club’s President and Chief Operating Officer. “The accreditation and proper funding for aftercare facilities will greatly enhance the well-being of our equine athletes, and we encourage other groups and individuals from all segments of our sport to support this Alliance .”
“Thoroughbred aftercare is something that touches us all,” said Nick Nicholson, President and CEO of Keeneland. “We are proud to do our part, and I know that virtually everyone else will be equally proud to do theirs in order to make the TAA an ongoing success.”
The TAA, a 501 (c) (6) non-profit organization with a 501 (c) (3) subsidiary, will fill out its staff and provide additional updates in the coming months. The TAA offices will be based in Lexington, Ky.
Skip,
You beat me to it. I was just coming here to post this. Most comments are in agreement that it should not be about politics (human), but about the horses.
Somehow, Barbara, I don’t trust this move. The JC is part of it, and so this is an exercise it was told to do by McKinsey. It’s cosmetic, and I pray hard that I am dead wrong, but I just cannot say hooray until I see this take root. Sometimes being a Doubting Thomas is necessary for reality checks…

Day Dreams Farm Therapy and Rescue/Michigan–PLEASE CONSIDER SENDING THIS RESCUE A FEW DOLLARS TO HELP OUT…thank you.
http://www.daydreamsfarm.com/
I don’t do updates very often because I tend to get involved in just trying to keep up with the daily runnings of the rescue. Here’s the bottom line: We had to board out 5 horses at 250 a month because of the dangerous mud and ice at the farm. Our Shipshe Rescue “Rain” came home from foster care unexpectedly because it was discovered we actually rescued her last year pregnant. We are expecting an April or May foal. She is a bit on the thin side and she has severe arthritis even though she is only 8 years old. She is costing a small fortune between feed and supplements to make sure she’s comfortable and happy. Now, I just found out that one of our old rescues “Kit” is being returned to us. We really have no place to put him, so I’m still trying to figure out what to do. What do we need? Money and help. We are so short on volunteers, I am doing most of the work by myself, running between two barns, I am responsible for working and grooming all 5 horses at the other barn. Im trying to pay the bills, getting ready for events, taking care of the 5 horses we also have here, trying to figure out how to bring some money into this rescue as well as try and spend time with my husband and 9 year old son, I also have a regular job outside of the farm. The problem is, because I’m mostly by myself, I don’t even have the time to interview and train new volunteers, so that becomes a double edged sword. What am I asking for? I don’t even know anymore. I keep having thoughts of shutting down the rescue. I’m tired, I’m frustrated and I keep having to pass by horses that need help because we’re barely staying afloat ourselves, especially with spending so much of our budget every month in board. And now ANOTHER horse coming home unexpectedly. To take the time to advertise horses, go through adoption applications and show horses to people is simply time I just don’t have right now. Another double edged sword. I simply am out of answers and I’m very quickly running out of the energy to keep this rescue alive.
A HEADS UP ON ANOTHER SCAM ABOUT HORSES GOING TO SLAUGHTER FROM GOOD FRIEND MINDY LOVELL IN CANADA:
It has been brought to my attention that a certain individual representing a micro chip company is claiming that through the use of their product that they are able to pull horses and in particular thoroughbreds from the slaughter plants in Quebec both from Canadian and American loads coming in. This person claims that they have an individual travelling to the slaughter plants, feedlots, auctions, etc. with a scanner in order to detect these horses that have their micro chip product injected into them. I contacted this person this morning and these were also the claims that she made to me personally.
From my knowledge of the rules and regulations concerning horses entering the property of any slaughter plant, it seemed highly unlikely and improbable and perhaps these were fraudulent claims on her part.
I then further investigated the truths of this matter by contacting contract buyers to ask them if they had any knowledge of this and what their “take” might be on the matter. They confirmed my thoughts on the matter – that this was not factual or remotely close to the truth and is not happening. I then further investigated by contacting the specific slaughter plant that the individual that “volunteers” for this woman was to attend today and who was also supposedly in the process of scanning horses as they were being unloaded at the plant at that very time. The plant once again confirmed my thoughts on the matter – this was not happening, had never happened, no horses were being “pulled out” either Canadian or American and that it was highly ILLEGAL to do so.
I then re-contacted the individual making these claims for an explanation and proof which she refused to give me – providing one excuse after the other and changing her story repeatedly. I find the actions of this person absolutely despicable in that she is deliberately misleading responsible horse owners into believing that should any of their horses fall through the cracks and have the misfortune of ending up in a slaughter plant that they can still be saved if they have this micro chip product injected into them because they will be there scanning for them and have the opportunity to pull these horses out of the plant. Again, these actions in pulling any horse out of a slaughter plant are highly illegal and the employees will certainly not condone this nor will the CFIA vet in attendance.

Jesse James; an 8 yr. old Tennesee Walking Horse gelding is up for adoption! He is 14.2 hands and has a sweet disposition. He was gelded four months ago, so he still has some testosterone left, but this horse has been ridden out and exposed to bicycles, bridges, cars, dogs, other horses, etc. Adoption Fee: $400.00 Because of a photo glitch, I cannot post his photos, but he’s a very dark, dark brown–almost black–and is adorable!!!!

I’ve done this once but will definitely do it again, Barbara…this horror plus the inhumanity of ACity, which is losing money all the time because of surrounding casinos in other states, dares to bring back diving horses to drum up business? This is a horror we can fight with calls and letters and demonstrations and pickets–only 140 miles from my home–
Our horses are under siege in every place in every way…and the cause is always the same–money…

In case there is any doubt whatsoever, RIP Deputy Broad is adamantly opposed to slaughter of horses. Period. There is no gray area. There is no fence to straddle. There is no necessary evil. There is no “better than” reason. There is no good place. There is no humane method. There is no horse that deserves it. There is no doubt.
Could it get any worse? More on Mountaineer/ PA:

Mountaineer is a problem track, the WVA Racing Commission is a problem commission, PA tracks and its racing commission are no better…this is what racing has become today, and our Fed and State govts DO NOTHING ABOUT IT and let the abuse and crime continue…what say we all to this outrage in all our states, not just these two…when will the public wake up to the truth about this industry
http://www.paulickreport.com/news/ray-s-paddock/saga-of-star-plus-doesn-t-this-horse-deserve-better/
The owner, Earle Mack, of Star Plus sold him with the understanding that he would never race again. He was injured on the track and would be a danger to himself and other horses and jockeys. He was to be placed at stud and then suitably and appropriately retired. Mr. Mack stood ready to take the horse back at any time. Both Mr. Mack and Star Plus were betrayed by the current owner, George Iacovacci, who has raced Star Plus at Mt. Pleasant Meadows in Michigan, twice at Mountaineer Park in West Virginia, Penn National Gaming’s Charles Town races in West Virginia, Parx Racing in Philadelphia. The above link from Paulick’s Report gives the details of the race tracks and the responses to Mr. Mack’s pleas for Star Plus and others advocating for this horse. For all who shared this shameful abuse of Star Plus, I hope at the very least, we can write to the racing commissions and tracks and let them know what our opinions are concerning their cruel and abusive behavior in aiding and abetting this dangerous situation without challenge to the owner and trainer when Mr. Mack made the situation known.
Dear family, friends, and faithful supporters,
We are pleased to announce that Saffyre Sanctuary has been one of the charities selected to be in a pilot film entitled “Giving”. The film, being produced by another non-profit, will allow us to reach a nationwide audience on a scale we could have never imagined. By supporting this film, you will in turn support us, allowing us to reach more potential donors, as well as letting people know who we are, what we do, and giving them hope for their horses, where maybe none existed before.
Below is the official press release and link to the project. Please donate to them (and to us if you wish) to help launch this wonderful film. Thank you all again!
“Giving” Gives 501(c)(3) Non-Profits a Voice
The movie pilot “Giving” will give a national voice to non-profits across the county. Many good non-profit programs lack funding and support due to the lack of public knowledge. This movie will change that with its upbeat view inside the world of non-profits.
Jacksonville, Florida 2012/01/30
“Giving” is a movie pilot that has been launched on Kickstarter for funding. This movie will give non-profits a voice. With many non-profits closing their doors because of the poor economy and lack of public support, this movie will help keep their great work in the front of people’s minds and hearts.
Kickstarter is a forum that allows regular people to donate towards the production cost of the film. Those who donate to the movie “Giving” will actively participate in the creation of the project. One non-profit will be chosen by those who donate to this film. With inclusion of non-profits like “Victory Junction Gang” “Black Forest Animal Sanctuary” and “Saffyre Sanctuary”, filmed through the eyes of our profession News and Feature Film production personal, this show is sure to create a unique look inside a world that many do not get to see. News outlets will be invited to question and answer session and given interview opportunities for each filming location. The shows producer and director have the knowledge and ability to create a strong voice for non-profits. After the pilot is completed it will be offered to the broadcast stations for series creation. Deborah Smith, the producer, will be available for interviews during February.

Judge Mckibbon decides that the Nevada round ups can continue. He cannot rule on speculations that the BLM might commit future abuse and tells the advocates they must go to Congress for change. Guess that sends the message that to get change, advocates can “occupy” their congressional representatives and the president’s communication systems. The court system believes their “hands” are tied and their authority is limited. It seems it is regarding the BLM.
The recommended response from the judge is also recommended by the advocates of Wild mustangs now. If you follow this link, you will find a sample fax to send to your Congressional representatives and their fax and telephone numbers. I am posting the sample fax here because the pictures have a very sad mustang all skinned up after a “gathering”. to create any humane care standard for this protected species. This very serious omission has lead to multiple instances of inappropriate conduct (admitted to) by the agency. This serious omission led to Federal Court Judge Howard McKibben ordering a Temporary Restraining order during the Triple B Roundup. Further action in Court denied the ability to address the issue programmatically citing that as “The job of Congress” but left the door open to address the issue on a roundup by roundup basis. It is absurd that the public need to press this issue in the Court system as BLM admits to: “poorly designed loading set up at the trap site, as well as unprofessional conduct by handlers at the trap site. Horses were observed being struck in the face, and often confused due to aggressive loading procedures and excessive pressure by multiple handlers. Several videos reveal that a few horses were repeatedly shocked with an electrical animal prod, sometimes in the face, and in one case, the use of this electrical prod led to a horse becoming stuck in a panel at the loading site. Some videos reveal horses being struck in more than one instance with the trailer gate to induce loading, and in one instance a horse appears to have been kicked in the head by a Sun J employee. In one video it appears that a horse was dragged into a trailer by a rope around its neck. As well as incidents of inappropriate pilot conduct.”
During the Court case BLM presented the Court with a “recommended practice document” that could easily be modified to become a policy that has consequence for violation. This is what was presented, suggested amendments in italics:
To ensure safe and humane handling of all gathered wild horse or burros:
1. Helicopters will not contact or operate too closely to wild horse or burros being gathered.
2. Handling aids, including electric prods, paddles, and flags will not be used in a manner
that is not consistent with domestic horse procedures.
3. Flagging will be used strategically to guard against desensitizing the wild horse or burros.
4. Kicking or hitting of wild horse or burros will not be tolerated.
5. Electric prods (hotshots) will not be used routinely on wild horses or burros. Electric prods are never to be applied to sensitive areas such as the face, head, genitals or anus. Electric prods may (only) be used when wild horse or burro, or human safety is in jeopardy. (and never
on an injured, young or pregnant animal)
6. Gates and doors will not be deliberately slammed or shut on wild horse or burros.
7. A detailed discussion on the need to pursue single wild horse or burros needs to occur during pre-work. Pursuing single wild horse or burros should be a rare event and not a standard operating procedure. Only the COTR, with input from Gather Manager, will identify and request the contractor to pursue single wild horse or burros.
8. The contractor will ensure that foals are not left behind or orphaned in the field. The method of capture will be authorized or requested by the COTR and or Gather Manager.
9. The need to rope specific wild horse or burros will be determined by the COTR on a case by case basis. The COTR will identify what wild horse or burros to be roped.
Mandate Urgently Needed for Humane Care Standard in BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program
10. Groups of wild horse or burros that escape the trap site while being moved with the helicopter will not have numerous attempts to recapture and push to the trap site. (i.e. running wild horse or burros at the trap more than two times, running horses to a lather. Or when distressed animals are noted)
11. Any foals that are not weaned, and have been maintained with their mares at the gather temporary holding corral, will be transported to the BLM holding facilities on the same day.
12. A small trough of water will be provided within the foal pen at the trap site.
13. All sorting, loading, or unloading of wild horses and burros will be performed during daylight hours unless supplemental light is provided in the area to facilitate visibility.
14. Screening (black screening that allows observation) on panels will be provided where loading operations occur to eliminate holes, gaps, or openings where horses can be injured.
15. Temperatures exceeding 82 degrees or below 28 degrees will halt operations.
16. Winds in excess of 25 mph create a safety hazard and suspend operations.
17. Injuries at the trap site will cause operations to halt until the injured animal has been appropriately transported from site.
18. Temporary Holding will supply at minimum 15 gallons of water per day per animal in a continuos supply as defined in the CFR.
19. Appropriate dust control will be done prior to running horses and throughout the day as noted in the CFR
20. Injuries and spontaneous abortions (not just deaths) will be noted in gather reports and statistics kept.
This list could be adopted immediately at the operation site as policy. With the COTR responsible for the actions at the location and authority to give written warnings and stop work orders if conditions are not met.
A policy for short term facilities could be added at a later date.
Mandating this simple action could generate confidence in a program that is swiftly loosing any credibility as an agency following a mandate to protect a symbol of American heritage. Time is of the essence.
Observations on the ground show the offensive conduct continues and is unacceptable conduct by our Nation.

All too heartbreaking…we are living in a land governed by the heartless…both parties have been enemies of animals…that this outrage continues when it is crystal clear what BLM’s motives are–is a sin on America’s soul
Amen to that!

VERY BEAUTIFUL 3-YEAR-OLD FILLY NEEDS A GOOD HOME! SHE IS AT FAIRGROUNDS RACE TRACK IN NEW ORLEANS LA. REALLY GORGEOUS!

Yesterday, I went to my vet’s office and talked with him. He has known me since 1985 and at that office, my kitties and puppies have never been afraid to go in. In fact, when something is wrong, they sit on my feet and put their noses on the car signalling that they need a different kind of help that I can give. So, he has been my vet and friend for a long time and always the vets at that office have been a friend to my four footed pals.
He was surprised about the reconciliation of the agriculture bill allowing horse slaughter; glad to get the EWA site and the link to their white paper; said of course they would post the War Horse poster; and took a number of cards for himself and the other two vets. He also wanted to talk with the other vets in his office and see if they could get a list together for me about whom to contact in Montgomery. Since they don’t usually get referrals for help with abused horses from their clients, he gave me the name of the person at the animal shelter who would be more in touch and who would need to know about me. He intends to get me the names of vets in Montgomery who still served large animals. Many no longer do. He also was going to gather some information about the costs of owning a horse in this area. I think it would be useful information if I will be speaking to some groups. So, I’m supposed to call him next week. It was a good start, I think, to an ongoing conversation.
Next time you see your vet, take a few minutes to invite them to our site and to our face book, as well as telling them about us and what we do. Your credibility with your vet is so much better than a letter from someone they do not know and it may open the door to listen to or read something from someone they have not met yet . They will probably be glad to put up a War Horse poster. If you have a card, give a willing vet some and ask for their help if you find a horse that needs their help. I bet your vet will be receptive too!
Another textbook meeting, Doris. Thank you for leading the way on this. I have an appointment with my vet next week and will use your example. Not too many horses in my suburban area, and my vet is all small animals, but i will find out if she knows large animal vets nearby (we have some very rich areas about 15-25 miles away where people have horses. Bravo, Doris!
Urge BLM to Cancel All Plans to Remove Idaho Mustangs from the Range
The Agency is Targeting Nearly 100 Wild Horses for Removal from Hardtrigger & Black Mountain Herd Management Areas if they are over the limit for HMA. That would leave only 30 in one area and 60 in another. The scientists have already found that to maintain genetic viability the herd needs to be 150-200. That information was shared at The Cloud Foundation site.
Watch a truly wonderful video of the wild ones and take action on their behalf at this link.

I believe the deadline is January 28th. Thanks for responding and responding and responding to the BLM plans to extinguish the wild ones. In this link, the points the action alert brings out are for disclosures about the cattle, and the planning and the costs for these “removals” along with the plea for humane and reasonable treatment for these beautiful wild ones. (Notice a change of language from “gatherings” to “removals”.)

Urgent Placement Alert
Race trainers/owners will periodically contact LOPE about racehorses that need to be placed urgently. If the LOPE Ranch is full, we post an urgent alert (and notify our email subscribers) to help place the horses as quickly as possible.
LOPE does not own these horses and therefore does not broker the transaction – instead, we put interested parties directly in touch with the race trainers/owners.
Cute, Sound Gelding Needs Home ASAP!
LOPE (LoneStar Outreach to Place Ex-Racers)has just learned about a horse in need of a home right away:
Baltruchis: 4-year-old @15H dark bay TB gelding. Sound with a nice build (looks more like a QH). Very well bred (see pedigree). His trainer says he would make a nice trail horse. He has a cut on his head that is healing well (needs another month or so to completely heal). Very sweet face!
(Photo) (Photo)
Contact: Baltruchis is located at Sam Houston Race Park in Houston. If you can give a loving, good home to this horse, please contact Becky at 614-517-6831 or by email at beckyb01b@aol.com.
The LOPE Ranch is currently full, so we appreciate your help in networking for this deserving horse.
Baltruchis is safe! As of February 6th Bally is with his new forever family in Texas!
UPDATE OF THE TERRIBLE SITUATION WE REPORTED EARLIER IN LOUISIANA:
More of the 60 or so Thoroughbreds seized from a Louisiana Farm earlier this month have found good homes, reports the local Humane Society. The horses were discovered on a Sabine Parish farm owned by Charles Ford, who faces animal cruelty charges for failing to care for the horses. The remains of two dozen other horses were also found on Ford’s property. AP reports:
“The Sabine Humane Society has been successful in finding additional foster homes where the animals can receive individualized attention. Still, society members are being “extremely cautious” about their picks to ensure the thoroughbreds are in trusted hands. Site visits are required to make certain the horses have adequate housing, fencing and paddock areas.”
“We also look at the other horses they have. This happens before these horses go to the foster homes,” Humane Society member Mary Key Brocato said.
“They need jobs. So we look for homes and placement where the horses will be brought back to health and then retrained for jobs, not racing jobs and not as brood mares. Just as we rescue a dog or cat from terrible conditions and find a new home where it will be loved and cared for, we will do the same for these horses. That’s our only goal for them,” she said.
Today, I went to the Annual SE Horse Fair! It was my very first horse fair and I wore my Zenyatta sweat shirt. I went to listen, but if your ears are burning, there is a reason. I talked about Zenyatta and EANDO and gave out my EAN business cards too. I invited people to come joing us, that there was no membership fee and that we were a volunteer group trying to save and help to save horses headed to slaughter or that are being abused.
Several people asked what was going to happen to all the horses then if they were not shipped to slaughter. I talked about establishing a retirement fund, recruiting more veterinarians to the VEW or to give discounted services for euthanasia for people and horse in need. I kept making the point that slaughter was not humane euthanasia. There was a need to support the rescue groups and resource groups and establish more retirement placements, as well as support for the already established retirement facilities.
I brought home a stack of cards and pamphlets and I became a new member of the Alabama Horse Council. I met and shook hands with several Alabama folks who are members of the AL Quarter Horse Association and other groups in the SE. I invited them to check us out on face book and this site. I encouraged all these horse loving people to join us so we could establish strong ties to help horses and each other in accomplishing that task. I was able to share with them the latest legislative news which they really wanted to know. I am learning and learning some more. I was invited to speak to a group of young folks in a 4 H group and also another group and encouraged to get on the speaker’s list for the next annual horse show. We’ll see how that goes.
You represented us so beautifully, Doris. You took advantage of a lovely social situation by teaching others what we and our movement stand for. And, you had a good time! Thank you so much for being a great team mate!!!
A GLIMMER OF HOPE FOR OUR HORSES…
Congress considers ending horse slaughter for meat
January 20, 2012|By Amy Worden, Inquirer Staff Writer
Charges filed against a Chester County woman for posing as a rescuer of horses while sending them to slaughter have prompted a new round of calls in Congress to end the killing of horses for meat in the United States.
U.S. Rep. Patrick Meehan (R., Pa.) on Thursday urged his colleagues in the House and Senate to pass legislation to halt horse slaughter after reading a report in The Inquirer that Kelsey Lefever of Honeybrook was allegedly selling animals for slaughter in Canada under false pretenses.
“This is a tragic example of why we need federal law to prohibit the transportation and sale of horses for slaughter in the first place,” said Meehan, one of 150 cosponsors of anti-slaughter legislation in the House. “Horses are not raised for human consumption, and their slaughter for sale overseas is a cruel and inhumane practice that is not consistent with our values here in Pennsylvania.
May it be so!
If you have a spare minute, I encourage you to contact U.S. Rep. Patrick Meehan (R., Pa.) and thank him for speaking out about lefever and the need to pass a law against horse slaughter to stop this kind of tragedy. Encourage your congress people to support Meehan’s position and any proposal he develops. (I know we’ve done this hundreds of times, but it takes a lot of encouragement to push that boulder uphill against all the monied opposition. This is sort of like needing a traffic light to be put up at a dangerous intersection. How many people have to die to establish sufficient reason to spend the money to put up a traffic light. We have to push the point in every way possible to us.
Received this good report in e-mail as I am catching up:

Thought I’d take a moment to invite those close enough to get here to the largest SE horse fair coming this weekend to Montgomery,Alabama. This is my first time to be able to go a horse fair so I’m pretty excited about it. I will take the business cards that I have remaining and give them out freely after I change the telephone number to my cell phone. Here’s what I know about the event. The Montgomery Advertiser announced that this coming weekend the largest horse fair in the SE returns to Alabama. The daily entrance fee is $10 and participants can see all events and activities at the fair and attend one of the largest equine trade shows in the Southeast. Veterinarians are volunteering from around the state to man the “Ask the Vet” booth. I am excited that demonstrations on driving, drill teams, dressage, high-jump exhibition, and more will be there for me to see at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, Alabama. If anyone is close and wants to come, but needs more information, please contact the Alabama Horse Council at http://www.alabamahorsecouncil.org or call (205)678-2882. Also you can call Dr.Cindy McCall at (334) 844-1556.
This will make you ill:

You are so right, Barbara. We see so much inhumane behavior in our job here, but this woman wins the award as the lowest form of life, lower than a maggot. I think she is either into substance abuse and needs the money or she is just plain nuts. She is receiving such a light reprimand, proving to us again that horses in America don’t have a chance. The law favors the animal abuser, not the animal. Read this one and weep…
A friend once asked if I believed that evil was real or an imaged concept to keep us too afraid to really be bad. I know evil when I see it and it is very real to those horses who lost their lives because it exists. Evil has not kept this person too afraid or nor any of the others who have harmed, abused or slaughtered any of the pretty horses, wild or domesticated.
Some people do not know the evil outcome of what they do. I am thinking of the person who braided the mane of a wild Corolla pony at the Outer Banks. The signs warn not to feed them or try to pet them or touch them in any way so they can remain in the wild. The consequences are spelled out clearly. The care takers were then forced to bring the pony in and re-home it. The innocent pony then paid the price by losing its freedom forever because someone just had to braid its mane. Selfish behavior can have an evil outcome too.

UPDATE: MAJOR MEDIA WENT TO THE FARM AND FOUND THE STARVING AND VERY SICK HORSES, AS PER THE ORIGINAL REPORT WE RECEIVED. MANY HORSES WERE REMOVED AND ARE RECEIVING CARE. THE YOUNG MUSTANG WITH THE INFECTED PENIS HAS LITTLE CHANCE OF SURVIVING BECAUSE OF THE EFFECTS OF HIS PROLONGED STARVATION. YET THE MEDIA ARE BEING POLITICAL AND SAYING THAT THIS MAN HAS A GOOD HEART AND WAS SAVING THE HORSES. IN MY EYE! HE WOULD GO TO AUCTIONS AND GET HORSES FREE, TAKE THEM BACK TO HIS FARM, PROVIDE LITTLE OR NO CARE, AND TRY TO MAKE AN EASY BUCK SELLING WHICHEVER ONES HE COULD. AND IF THE HORSES DIDN’T SELL, HE PUT THEM IN THE BACK OF HIS PROPERTY TO ROT. THIS MAN IS A HOARDER YET THE AUTHORITIES AND THE MEDIA ARE PAINTING HIM WITH A DIFFERENT BRUSH. HORSES CANNOT GET A FAIR DEAL IN THIS COUNTRY. EVEN THE GOVERNMENT IS OUT TO GET THEM. AT LEAST SOME WERE SAVED FROM THIS MUD HOLE CALLED A RANCH. THE RESCUER WAS CRYING THAT SHE COULD NOT TAKE THEM ALL BECAUSE THERE WAS NO ROOM. SHE WAS FORCED TO LEAVE SOME BEHIND AND KNEW SHE WAS ABANDONING THEM TO STARVATION AND NO CARE. SO ENDS JUST ONE STORY LIKE THIS IN THESE UNITED STATES–THE LAND WHERE MOST ANIMALS ARE OVERBRED BUT HAVE NO CHANCE FOR A HAPPY LIFE. SOMETIMES, YOU JUST HAVE TO EXPRESS YOUR ANGER AND FRUSTRATION AT SUCH BEHAVIOR, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE COP-OUT EXCUSE IS “HE HAS A GOOD HEART”.
SERIOUS CASE OF HORSE HOARDING IN DALLAS COUNTY, TEXAS
, 210 Bunche, Seagoville, TX 75142.
Two friends went out to see the horses on Tuesday 1/3/12 and there were 36 yearling horses on Mr. Offords property. Some needed immediate medical care and others were emaciated. While walking the property they discovered at least 20 skeleton remains of horses and there were other remains further back in the property that they could not access.
Today, Sunday, 1/8/12, a family went to Mr. Offords property and took three horses from him. He had new horses available for purchase and some for free. Mr. Offord told these people that he now has 300 horses. He had more horses that were not seen on the prior visit on 1/3 that are more emaciated than the ones photographed. He brings groups of horses from the back of his property to the front for viewing. It is unknown just how many are in desperate need of medical care and feed. How many remains of dead horses is also unknown.
Mr. Offord’s property is very large and wooded. It backs up to the Trinity River and river bottoms. A thorough investigation needs to be conducted to view the entire property. Mr. Offord has a history of collecting horses. He can not provide proper medical care and feed/hay for these horses. With the large number of skeletal remains, it is obvious that many have died in his care.
The Sheriff’s department is aware of this situation. They have known about Mr. Offord and his history for years, yet nothing has been done to prevent this from happening. This hoarding, death and abuse of the horses must be stopped. TWO OTHER AGENCIES ARE LOOKING INTO THIS PROBLEM–DO NOT CALL ANY TX AUTHORITIES UNTIL THESE AGENCIES REPORT WHAT THEY’VE SEEN. SO FAR, ANYONE WHO GOES TO THE FARM SEES HEALTHY HORSES. THEY DO NOT RESEMBLE THE HORSES SHOWN ON OUR ACTION NEEDED PAGE, DO THEY…
ADVERTISING IS SO CORRUPT…NOW A NEW ATHLETIC BRAND OF SHOE, SKECHERS, HAS FILMED A COMMERCIAL FOR USE ON THE SUPERBOWL TELECAST THAT SHOWS GREYHOUNDS RACING AND BEATEN BY A SMALL DOG WEARING–YOU GUESSED IT–SKECHERS. Greyhound racing is a horrid sport. It forces dogs who are bred for coursing and speed to chase a live rabbit skewered on a moving post around the track. Dogs are kept hungry. And when their racing career is over, disreputable owners–and they all are–kill the dog in some way, often taking it out in the woods and either hammering it to death or stabbing its heart–no joke. That’s the thanks these wonderful dogs who have lived in slavery to these immoral owners get as a reward. Thank heaven for the greyhound rescue groups who save as many of them from this brutalization as they can. Rescued greyhounds make terrific companion animals in the home. They are couch potatoes and gentle. So PLEASE LOG ONTO THIS SITE AND VOTE AGAINST THIS IMBECILIC AD FROM BEING SHOWN ON TELEVISION. AND DON’T BUY SKECHERS AS ANOTHER SIGN OF DISAGREEMENT WITH THIS MANUFACTURER. Thank you so much for speaking out against a horrid sport that must be stopped.

Want to wish all of you a Happy, Healthy New Year. Love and Hugs, JB
Want to do one more good thing this year? You could choose to contact the BLM and disagree with the plan to gather 30 young horses from Cloud’s herd, bringing their numbers to 120 which scientist say is not sufficient to sustain the herd. Bait and/or water trapping could begin as early as mid-January 2012. Comments are due to the BLM by January 6, 2012. Choose to comment and to support the NO Action Alternative, the only alternative that keeps a viable population of horses on the mountain. Go to http://www.thecloudfoundation.org/for further details about the BLM’s plan and how they are acceptin comments. They also provide some talking points.
In contrast to the Pro-slaughter article and comments, here is a follow up from me to you
Joe Camp, author of the best selling book The Soul of a Horse: Life Lessons from the Herd has written an excellent article that can be accessed at this link.

Alternatively, you can go to the San Diego County News and select Commentary at the top of the page. Scroll down to the Joe Camp article: “New Court Battle To Once and For All Give Wild Horses Their Rightful Place as an Indigenous Native Species in the Western United States”.
If you feel like trying to provide a little education to some very ignorant people who are reacting to a very slanted pro-slaughter article published on December 28, 2011 in Outdoor Life by Gayne C. Young. I’m giving you the link below. The title of the article is “Wildlife Advocates’ Lawsuit Saves Horse Testicles in Nevada” and can be accessed at http://www.outdoorlife.com/. I’m not at all sure that the folks want to know the facts, except for one who is asking questions.

Subject: CALL TO ACTION!! HAY CUBES NEEDED
To All of My Friends;
We have been very busy here at the ranch, rescuing, training, hauling, adopting out and mostly FEEDING our herd here.
We have had so many wonderfull heartwarming adoptions and continue to place horses in amazing homes.
As many of you out there know, feed is very difficult to find and when you do it is very expensive right now. We have been offered a great deal on Alfalfa hay cubes but will need to purchase a truck and trailer load in order to get it. With 45-65 hungry mouths to feed every day, we are always scrambling to make sure that they get everything that they need.
We are going to need $5,300.00 in order to purchase the feed that we desperately need for our rescue. The tax year is ending and I’m sure that there are people out there that need that last minute tax write off. Please consider donating to our feed fund and help the horses that we have all worked so hard to rescue.
Any donations are greatly appriciated. We have untill the middle of January to purchase the hay cubes at that price and get it delivered.
Thank you all so much

A woman who owns four horses in Pensacola had to relocate to Orlando for a new job, but had to leave her horses behind in someone else’s care. She has been sending money to the caretaker, but the health of all her horses is rapidly deteriorating. This woman is desperately seeking someone to transport them to the Orlando area. She is willing to pay for gas. She has gotten quotes from transporting companies of $750.00. She can pay $300.00 right now, but it will take time to save enough to pay a transport company. These horses are in trouble and need to be moved now. If anyone can help, please let us know.

A dear friend shared this story and I believe it is good news that should be shared. According to Advisen front page headlines, U.S. District Judge Scott Skavdahl is allowing wild horse advocacy groups to intervene in a lawsuit in which livestock operators are trying force the removal of wild horses from private lands in an area of roughly 2 million acres in southwestern Wyoming. For more details, the link gets you to a page with headlines. Scroll down to this story.

HOW MANY CONGRESSMEN DOES IT TAKE TO SCREW A HORSE?
That’s the latest headline on the latest in Vickery Eckhoff’s articles on horse slaughter in the USA, and it’s terrific. Riding along with it is an article by John Holland and Vicki Tobin about equine overbreeding. (You might have a question or two when you read that second article because of the statistics quoted…an explanation for the main point of the article is explained further into the article.)
I hope Eckhoff publishes all four of her articles on horse slaughter in booklet form so her message can go even farther than it has. She speaks for us.

GLORIOUS, HEROIC VIDEO! I am so overwhelmed by this…first of all, WOMEN did it…second of all, your heart remains in your mouth the entire time. Third, the music is perfect. Fourth, I was talking to the screen, urging the horses to not stop or to get up when they fEll! You cannot help but cry when the herd gets the idea…
To see these horses, cold, frightened, starving, pushing through the cold water, sometimes slipping and then getting up…with the women herding them in—just heroic. Holland certainly does have those weather/water flukes—the entire country is under sea level.
I will never forget this…this is a trailer I would love to see in a movie theatre…this should be seen by as many people as possible…

Well, dear colleagues, we helped Marlene rescue those doomed horses, including the two pregnant mares (one of whom is Little Cloud’s momma) and the two-year-old. Now she needs help to feed them through the winter and, most particularly, the mares need farrier care immediately.
Here’s Jeanie’s message and some photos of the girls…and their hooves. Please, if you could spare something to help these horses survive, all of us (and the horses) would be grateful. Thank you, on behalf of the horses, Skip for Equi-Army-NDO
SEE PHOTOS ON OUR ACTION NEEDED PAGE!!!! THANK YOU!
Just heard from Diane at Panhandle Equine Rescue. Great news! The minis and donkeys have been removed, taken to the vet, and Coggins pulled. All but 5 jacks and 2 mini mares have been placed. Their pictures will appear tomorrow on the website http://www.panhandleequinerescue.org. Thanks to all who helped!
Just got an e-mail from Diane in FL about the Molino herd of donkeys and minis. The owner has surrendered the herd. Two donkeys have gone down, and they have been rushed to the vet. Please send a little to help if you can. They are so adorable, and it is desperate. Link is http://www.panhandleequinerescue.org.
I did–hope others will. Wish I had some land to adopt a few…
SADLY, THE LITTLE JENNY SHOWN ON OUR ACTION NEEDED PAGE, HANGING IN A SLING, HAS DIED. IT HAD BEEN NEGLECTED FOR SO LONG, IT HAD NO STRENGTH LEFT. GREAT VET CARE WAS GIVEN TO HER, BUT SHE JUST COULDN’T MAKE IT AND COLLAPSED AND DIED THIS MORNING. RIP, LITTLE JENNY. THANK YOU, PANHANDLE EQUINE RESCUE, FOR ALL THE FINE WORK YOU DID TO RESCUE ALL THE MINIS AND DONKEYS IN THAT LARGE HERD. YOU TRIED SO HARD TO SAVE LITTLE JENNY…THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING
Don’t know why the link landed all over the page as it did. Maybe that happened because the link is so long. I just clicked it and it still works so I encourage you to try it. Thanks for your patience! I’ll try to post here again and see if it behaves better this time.

And it did! Don’t know why it did OK this time either. Not going to worry about that point. Too many horses to worry about that are much more important.
OH well, when I clicked “REPLY” it spread all over the page again. I counted my chickens too soon.

I just returned home after participating in a demonstration against horse-drawn carriages in NYC. Only about 14 of us and there should be hundreds of people. The mayor of the city could care less about the cruelty these horses endure, and the tourists make a beeline to ride these carriages, thereby furthering the abuse. I BEG YOU TO READ THIS BECAUSE IT’S UP TO ALL OF US THROUGHOUT THE USA TO STOP THIS–WE HAVE TO INFORM THE TOURISTS BEFORE THEY GET HERE…
ATTENTION HORSE ADVOCATES IN 50 STATES: PLEASE ADVISE ALL VISITORS TO NOT TAKE CARRIAGE RIDES IN CENTRAL PARK. THE HORSES ARE ABUSED, LIVE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND HORRID STABLES, AND DRIVERS KEEP THEM WORKING 12 TO 15 HOURS PER DAY, WITHOUT REST. IT IS HORSE CRUELTY THAT NEVER ENDS, AT THE HANDS OF DRIVERS THAT CARE NOTHING ABOUT THE HORSE. THE HORSES ARE COLLAPSING AND DYING IN THE STREETS OF THE CITY IN ALL SEASONS. PLEASE!!! UNLESS WE INFORM THE TOURISTS BEFORE THEY COME TO NEW YORK CITY, THEY WILL COME BY THE THOUSANDS AND HELP ABUSE THESE HORSES AND REWARD THESE CRUEL DRIVERS WITH BLOOD MONEY. THANK YOU.

Slaughter is not the answer–stopping the breeding is!
Good news ( I think ) http://www.horsetalk.co.nz/news/2011/12/071.shtml
Because this NZ publication took this article from the USDA newsletter, it is probably all lies and propaganda and trickery. So sayeth many sages in our movement.
HERE’S HOW WE FEEL ABOUT THIS…
http://brownfieldagnews.com/2011/11/21/focus-on-facilities-for-restoring-horse-slaughter/
That this is happening again, that these fiends in this country wants to restore the slaughterhouses and continue their crusade to bring horsemeat to our tables–disgusts me and thousands of others who have fought so hard to prevent this. And the reason it’s happening? MONEY. Callousness, greed, and money by the pound, as these magnificent and noble animals get sent to hideously violent deaths. If you could just look at the eyes of horses locked up and squeezed together in pens as they watch, one by one, a horse being dragged to slaughter. They can smell the blood, here the screams…their eyes are stark white in their socket…they are gripped with fear and want to run and cannot. And they wonder: what did i do wrong? What made them take me here? Why do they want to hurt me? And there is no answer except those these trapped animals will not understand: overbreeding for money, lust for cash, and the complete denial and abrogation of an owner’s responsibility toward his horse…
PLease help if you can! The situation is desperate. They are on our list.
Subject: Emergency Hay Fund needed for starving donkeys and minis
We are desperately in need of donations for emergency hay for approximately 30 donkeys and minis that are starving on a property in Molino. The owner is in the hospital, so there is no help there. These animals have been neglected for quite some time; some have already died. We are currently lining up eight round rolls to be delivered to the property this afternoon, but we need help with the funding. To donate you can click on Paypal through our website http://www.panhandleequinerescue.org or mail to P.E.R., P.O. Box 777, Cantonment, FL. 32533 and specify that it is specifically for the “Herd in Molino”. OR you can phone in a donation to Farm and Nursery Mart at 850-944-5700 and put it on our account. Again, you need to specify that it is for this purpose, so your proceeds will go towards hay for the herd. Thanks for any help you give,

WE APPLAUD THREE CHIMNEYS FARM IN KY FOR ITS POLICY OF TAKING CARE OF THEIR OWN!!!!
“The recent re-legalization of horse slaughter in the U. S. brought to the forefront an issue that has been a hot-button topic within the Thoroughbred industry for years, and with good reason: What happens to Thoroughbreds when their racing days are behind them or who, for whatever reason, never make it to the racetrack.
At Three Chimneys, our view on the topic is simple: we take care of our own.
We have had a protocol in place for years regarding our policy on this subject, but until recently we chose to remain private about our practices, preferring to work quietly behind the scenes in many situations. With the debate now reinvigorated and the numerous questions we’ve been asked, we felt it was the appropriate time to be more forthcoming about how we view and address the issue.
For years many people who have visited Three Chimneys, either in person or virtually through our website and social media pages, have learned that stallions that stand at Three Chimneys also retire here. Recent retirees have included inaugural Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Wild Again and world-renowned international sire, Rahy, both of whom lived here until the day they died. Even a horse like Kentucky Derby winner Silver Charm, who started his stallion career at Three Chimneys before being relocated to stand at stud in Japan, will be brought back to Three Chimneys to retire once his breeding days are behind him. The same holds true for our broodmares. When their mothering days are over, they retire here and are cared for the rest of their days.
A frist- class operation. One to be emulated by all. Thank you, Three Chimneys!
Received this today about the carriage horses in NYC. A travesty. Please post everywhere you can.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWhmuUUeZKU&feature=share
And here is today’s NY Times front page article on the carriage horse situation. Has to be read to understand what these horses are going through and how they live. Breathing fumes and walking on concrete all day long and then going home to “stables” which are nothing more than concrete cubes totally fenced in with bars on top so the horse cannot even look out. It is cold in winter and hot in summer and crawling with vermin and bugs. This is a NYC tradition that has to stop and we have to let all our friends across the country know that the concept of the romantic carriage ride through Central Park is a lie that abuses and kills horses.

Ya’ll are great! Thank you for your comments. DSTUART I believe overbreeding is the root of the problem. Everybody who has a great-grandson or great-granddaughter of Secretariat or Dash For Cash thinks it’s an animal that should reproduce itself. It is infuriating! AQHA people like to blame ending slaughter in this country is what made the botton fall out of the QH market. In fact, AI was the beginning anf then they allowed multiple embryo transfers. At least the Jockey Club has stayed true in their mission to preserve the integrity of the TB. They are facing pressure to follow the AQHA. My father-in-law passed away yesterday. I will probably not be posting for a few days.
Angela, I am so sorry to hear of your father-in-law’s passing. My condolences to all of your family.

Thank you. My father-in-law was a true and great horseman. Over the span of his life, he bred many AQHA champions. Being a lifelong member of the AQHA, he was against nearly everything they have evolved into. I am so thankful he instilled his principles, values and that great horsemanship in my husband.
Please accept my condolences for your loss. He sounds like he was a great guy who stood up for his beliefs. Sympathy and prayers on their way to you and to your husband.
I wanted to provide an update on Hot Under Pressure (“Hoot”) and ask that – if you were considering sending a donation for his rescue and continuing care, or know someone who might be willing to – please do so! Hoot is at Five Star Farm in far north Phoenix. It is a super facility and he is being worked twice a week by a CANTER Arizona trainer to get him ready for a new career. The farrier has redone all four feet and replaced his racing plates with regular shoes. Luckily, Hoot is sound, and an energetic but sweet tempered horse. Since he won’t even turn 4 until April 12, 2012, he will be a long-term companion and workmate to some very lucky person. I think he already senses that HE is very lucky! I am paying for his board, training, and the farrier while he waits for his new forever human. I could use a little help if you can. I am already especially grateful to Trina, Barb W., Skipper, Stacy, Doris, and Tressia for their incredible generosity. I will send more photos for Skipper to post that shows his new red halter and lead rope that look so good on his dark bay self. Horsie kisses from Hoot and Hugs from me.

HERE’S PART TWO OF THE FORBES MAGAZINE SERIES ON HORSE SLAUGHTER:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/vickeryeckhoff/2011/12/01/saving-princess-madeline-a-racehorses-tale/
HOW DID THIS WRITER KNOW ABOUT OUR DEPUTY BROAD AND NO DAY OFF? This is a very good article on saving a horse from a slaughterhouse in NJ who turned out to be a NJ-bred TB who had raced at Monmouth and was betrayed by the vet who bought her…
Barbara (not sure what your user name is on this sight), I would like to thank you for not attacking me on the Zenyatta forum. It probably sounded like I was an advocate of slaughter. Let me clarify, I am not. However, I see the reality of all these unwanted horses regularly. Just this week, I have had 3 call asking me to take more horses in. Yesterday, I was in a restaraunt and someone came up and asked me to take 4 off their hands. It breaks my heart but I can’t save them all.
I have been an owner/trainer for 25+ years. I know where every horse I have ever bred or owned is. I have been fortunate enough to make a living off of the animal I love and I take my responsibilty to them very serious.
Currently, I have 7 that were on their way to Mexico before they ended up with me. As I said on the Zenyatta forum, I have had to become selective in what I take in.
I am hoping to connect with people who have been affiliated with successful rescue operations. I have the knowledge, expertise and facilities to handle the horses, it’s the funding and people skills I lack.
Thank you again for your civility. I sincerely hope an informative dialogue develops.
Hi Angela–Our President is Skipper (also known as Barbara Grimaldi on Z’s site) and I am Barbara Wood, known as bew9832 on this site. Thank you so much. We all need each other.
Angela, your statement on the Z site was informative, honest, compassionate and practical. There are always more sides to an issue than appear at first, and you uncovered another layer of truth. You are for the horses; so are we. Welcome to our site.
Sincerely,
Skip (Barbara)
Angela, I am happy to have you here and to get your thoughtful opinions. The very bottom line in all that we face is horse overbreeding – driven mostly by greed, and some by “the big dream” of the next KD winner, or Reining Horse of the Year regardless of the faults one’s mare or stallion possesses. We are sadly a very long way from having some restrictions on registering horses based on passing a conformation test and accumulating points for performance. I’ve stated in emails to my EANDO colleagues that our battle has three prongs: anti-slaughter legislation (here as well as transport across borders); foaling to retirement funding for every TB registered; and reducing the insane overbreeding of TBs and QHs (mostly). Daunting. I guess we really have a fourth prong – assisting in or facilitating the rescue of critical needs horses (and eventually building some sort of treasury that helps that). Sigh.

We ask all able bodied Americans to pick up the phone and call the, Animal Friendly President to do something to head off this inhumane and un-American action NOW!
I called and also sent an email to Obama. I also contacted my state representatives.

For those who agree with the new horse slaughter bill, please watch this video and after watching it is this still acceptable to you? This is what horse slaughter looks like and if this is what you support and you agree with in this video, please delete me from your friends list. I am not interested in being your friend. I am not interested in being friends with anyone who supports or condones this kind of cruel behavior. I am against any kind of horse slaughter or animal cruelty here and on foreign soil. ~ Rachel

EXCELLENT ARTICLE, EVELINE, with good quotes by SPCA. The article points toward money as a big motivator for this victory of the slaughter advocates. Thank you for posting!
This is an excellent letter, Doris! Now that we are all earning our chops blitzing the White House about the horse slaughter bill, perhaps a blitz of the same kind can be aimed here? Get the same media outlets that have taken up the slaughter story to take up this one too – from OUR perspective, not the cattle growers or range managers’ perspective? Let’s think on this as a good project in tandem with our horse slaughter efforts.
